About the Bastian Books Series
These
enjoyable picture books for two-to-six year olds are designed to prepare the
young child for medical procedures, either at home, in the hospital setting or
at a clinic, surgery center, radiology department, laboratory etc.
It is a
series of several books, where Bastian the cheetah, in the most fun,
relaxing,
and informative way, will take the young reader on a journey
through all the most common procedures performed on children in this young age
group. Written in an honest story format, the books covers all practical and
sensatory information
necessary for the young age group to prepare for a
procedure.
“Parents of course, should be partners in the preparation
process, receiving explanations themselves and assisting in preparation of their
children… By providing parents material to discuss with their children, the
hospital personnel spares parents the discomfort of not knowing how to talk to
their children about upcoming events.
By providing information and emotional
support to parents, hospital personnel can reduce parental anxiety, thereby
indirectly benefiting the children.”
A combination of information plus
emotional support has been found to be most effective in reducing
anxiety”
- R. H. Thompson M.A. & Gene Stanford Ph.D. Child life Specialists
“My goal is to stay as truthful to the children as possible. Since procedures are done in various ways at different facilities, the books are written in a story format, just reflecting the basics to be expected for each procedure. The medical personnel can then add or take away, when talking to the child about the procedure”.
